I must admit that I grew up in the best TV era of all time, from late 60′s to the early 80′s. TV was extra good then. It didn’t rely on CGI. It didn’t try to just copy the competition once a network had found a hit, they just tried to outdo each other by searching for the next great big idea. They aimed at making things fun instead of depressing. Product placement was hardly present in any scenes. And the intro or end credit song(s) were totally memorable. I find that today everything is a rehash, a re-imagening, a copy of something that was done better 30 years ago, albeit with cheesier effects. From Adam 12, to Hawaii 5-0, to 6 Million Dollar Man, to Charlie’s Angels, to Golden Girls and all the gems in between, I’m glad I grew up in that period of time.
The one exception comes from the late 90′s explosion of reality TV with Survivor leading the pack. I’ve been watching Survivor since the very first episode and I’m still watching it today. Am I addicted? No, I could miss an episode without having to search all interwebs to find out in details what happened. Same goes for Amazing Race, which I absolutely love but when I miss an episode, I can still function.
A few years back, RuPaul came out with Drag Race. DR and I watched the first season when it aired in Canada, months after it aired in the States. You could tell RuPaul was having tons of fun with this little show, and although I would’ve preferred a different winner, I was totally hooked on the glamour these she-males brought to our big screen TV. Unfortunately, they never aired Season 2, Season 3 nor Drag U in Canada and I never got to see more of RuPaul’s Drag Race until very recently when 2 of the best guys I know gave us copies of all episodes on dvd… It took us 4 nights to watch all of Season 2 and Season 3 minus the last 4 episodes which had not aired yet… Our friends were about to travel and Easter was coming, so we decided that after the last episode aired on April 25th, we’d get together and watch them together over some fancy drinks… That’s when I realized I was addicted to this show, I needed to get the ending. I needed my crowned winner…
This past weekend we got together and watched it all… My fave did win too… but I must admit that it was tough to have to wait so many days & hours to get to that moment. And now I cannot wait for Season 4…
Honorable mentions also go to Dexter, Mad Men and The Walking Dead as more recent shows I could, possibly, maybe, be addicted to.
