This past weekend, DR and I packed up the rental car with lots of toys and goodies and drove to my mom’s just south of Montreal to meet up with my sis and her family as it was the only time we could all be together this year to celebrate.
Unfortunately, the timing sucked as it turned out to be snow storm central with one huge hit on Friday when we were scheduled to leave and another even bigger one on Sunday when we were to returned. I grew up in Quebec, I’m used to snow, so what the hell, we didn’t cancel, we braved it all. And although it was a very short visit, it was totally worth it to be together.
Here’s a little rundown of those 36 hours:
- We drove a total of 14.5 hours in blowing snow
- We saw 17 vehicles spun off the roads
- We took 4 pee breaks while on the road
- We went to the mall once
- We slept for only 5 hours
- We made one snow angel
- We ate way too much (twice)
- We played one “intense” game of charade
- We spent more than 3 hours opening gifts
- We woke up to -29 Celsius (with windchill)
- We skipped breakfast to get on the road earlier (crazy idiots)
- We now own bed sheets with sharks on them (my sis rocks)
- We had an amazing time
Here’s a little video of the drive:

There is no such thing as snow where I live so can I be really ignorant and ask lots of really ignorant questions?
Okay thanks,
So how fast were you travelling there? Were the roads salted? What car were you in – front, rear or all-wheel-drive? Do you carry chains or use studded tires?
I’m sure the asking of those questions probably have you snow drivers doubled over laughing but over here the worst you get is rain, that whole snow thing would be too much to handle, I’ve never been any colder than -4 Celcius and even that was almost too much to handle!
Just watching the video of driving in that weather makes me nervous.
But in response to Kezza, it does make me laugh when people from further south ask about chains on tires (or actually whip some out when it does snow there).
I drove through the same conditions on Sunday to get my mom home from our trip to see my sister in North Carolina. And as I was completely pissed at my mom, I then drove home through the same conditions, in the dark. 8+ hours of winter wonderland fun.
At one point we saw a trailer home and F150 Truck in the ditch, both upside down and the truck was still attached! It was freaky.
SharkBoy was a trooper and did all the driving and put up with me being really really bored/nervous as hell, in the passenger seat.
