Although it’s a word I rarely use myself, it always makes me laugh when I hear it:
RETARD
It’s funny to me, used in any way.
What’s even more amusing though is how people disguise the word in these politically correct times. Recently I was attending a work function and the speaker used “Developly Delayed” to speak of a kid was mentally challenged. It must have looked like I was really paying attention when I started taking notes during his speech, but all I really wanted to do was to write down this impossibly retarded new expression: Developly Delayed… I’m French, I can’t be 100% sure, but isn’t Developly not even a word?
On the other hand, a very intelligent and very beautiful young woman I work with made a silly mistake the other day and referred to herself as a Retardo Barbie, which made me laugh out loud.
If you’re going to make up a word nowadays, Retardo is definitely a winner over Developly.
Your assignment is to use the word RETARD in a comment. If you must call me one, make it funny, I’m developly sensitive.

“Developly” is a perfectly cromulent word, you retardo.
Cromulent?
Ahhh, cromulent!
“Retardo” sounds like a supervillian or maybe a clown. I usually just shorten it to ‘tard.

At work we refer to the regular ones as “typical” and the developmentally delayed as “special needs”. BTW…did I mention that my bf works at the “tard factory”? ooops
I know this will kill the buzz, but isn’t referring to retards as retards or ‘tards, along the same lines as calling someone or something queer as “gay?”
I personally don’t have anything invested in either end, as I’m a college grad and mostly hetero, but the topic comes up now and then.
It seems to me that referring to someone with two heads where one is an undeveloped fraternal twin as “double stupid head” or a Japanese girl with one good leg and two wooden ones as “Eileen Twice.”
Hey Lew: not killing the buzz, it’s good to have both sides.
My reasoning behind this, is that RETARD is a forbidden word in our politcally correct world… therefore bringing me humour when it’s used. Today we MUST use the accepted terms to describe people with learning disabilities.
On the other hand, GAY is a word still commonly used nowadays with a solid true meaning to describe a minority, therefore if used maliciously can be hurtful…
Hope it makes sense, I’m thinking French and trying to write English.. lol
Ah. I get it.
I was actually reading it in French and listening in English.
And I do say retarded a lot. I’m kinda retarded like that.
i can’t say i buy it. there are lots of magic words like nigger and spic and faggot, and they all mean different things in different contexts. currently, it seems more often than not both the words “retard” and “gay” are used to describe things that are perceived of as stupid. somehow retard seems to be more socially acceptible than using gay, but it strikes me as being as veiled version of the same thing.
was the guy maybe saying “developmentally?”
He might have been trying to say developmentally, but he certainly didn’t…
I once heard a girl say that something she didn’t like was “totally gay”. Then, realizing that she’d just said something rude and politically incorrect, corrected herself by adding “sorry, I mean, retarded.”
I don’t really see the difference between the two expressions, as long as each is used with the knowledge and intent that it’s funny precisely BECAUSE it’s so insensitive and rude. Used in that way, it takes power away from the people who actually mean these words to be hurtful.
Well…there is one other difference I guess…being retarded is clearly a bad thing and being gay isn’t. Maybe that’s a horrible thing to say, but come on, in no way is it good, or even neutral, to be retarded.
In spite of having been tard and retard, the feathers still didn’t stick to the mongaloid.
