You Try Walking In Those Shoes!!!

E1 sent me this today, she knows my passion for “fall” fashion.

I laugh harder everytime I see it…

Marina Monster

It was a shark movie, it was $5, it was filmed in Hamilton. How was I to resist?

Possibly the worst movie I’ve even seen. And yet I was hypnotized enough to watch it through the end. The acting is as good as you can make out from the poster below… and the special effects too!

See the trailer here!

Come to our place to see the entire movie, but you will have to sign a waiver so we don’t get sued, as you will never get that hour back again. And you cannot throw anything at the TV when the shark starts talking at the end: “Yummies, give me some yummies” as he’s attacking a man in a boat… I was comatose for days! But I’ll watch it again with you…

My Sci-Fi Guy

4 years ago, Dead Robot took me to my very first Sci-Fi convention, I didn’t know what to expect and ended up laughing for days afterwards, having visions of the teens and not-so-teens dressed up in their favourite characters… It was also cool to see in person some of the original cast from Star Wars and Star Trek even though I’m not a fan of those shows.

My feelings about these conventions changed dramatically after attending the Star Wars convention at Disney in June, as you know Disney knows how to put on a show. I totally got into it… we even bought light sabres and walked around for the rest of the day with them:

So yesterday, the Sci-Fi convention was back in town and we got up early to get there, which was a good thing since by 8:30am, the line-up was already excessively long. Blah blah blah, fast forward to 10am and in we go… (DR has posted his pix already, go take a look). This year, the convention was fairly attractive as Adam West, the original Batman from the TV show was attending, as well as Ryker for Star Trek Next Generation, the 3 versions of Annakin Skywalker, young (Jake Lloyd), teen/adult (Hayden Christensen) and Darth Vader (David Prowse), as well as the ever so sexy Temuera Morrison who played Jango Fett in Episode 2. Also in attendance was Malcolm McDowell, Adrienne Barbeau, Charisma Carpenter (Buffy and Angel), some chick from the new Battlestar Kill Me Galactica, George Romero & Dario Argento, two famous horror movie directors. All of them available to their fans for authographs and pictures…

Of course we didn’t wait in line to meet any of them…

But we tried on some hats…

FUCK!!!!!

If it’s not the screaming homeless from hell on the front street keeping us awake all night, it’s the crackheads in the back alley trying to break in or steal our bikes.

This is the 3rd time someone tried to steal from us here in 3 years. All 3 times happened when the lights in the kitchen were off… We used to leave the kitchen lights on to keep away undesirables as our back door has very easy access from the emergency staircase in the back of our apartment. We are lucky enough to have our hydro included in the rent. One day our landlord asked us to “save on hydro”… so we turned off the lights in the kitchen, that was our contribution, but that same week I surprised someone trying to get through our windows #8, how fun! Needless to say the lights were right back on.

A month ago, the lightbulb burned and voila, just like someone was watching for it, they tried to steal our bikes from the back balcony, luckily we had 3 locks on them and they were only able to cut through 2 of them. We bought bigger and better locks right after that incident and kept the bikes in the kitchen for a bit.

1 week or so ago, we decided it was time for the bike to get some fresh air again and we put them back on the balcony. Last night, right after we went to bed the lightbulb above the stove burnt out as we found out this morning while making breakfast and yes they tried once more. The locks were strong enough to hold the uber criminals at bay, but they were so mangled that I couldn’t use the key to open mine up, so I had to use a grinder to cut through it. Bikes are back in the kitchen… YEH!

I’m at a loss, calling the police doesn’t solve the problems… the screaming homeless is still screaming, and the crackheads in the parking lot are still there… I feel like I’ll have no choice but to leave this apartment but it’s been my home for 4 years now and I still love it. I’ve been playing a lot of Resident Evil 4 lately and it’s given me some ideas on how to deal with the problems but none of them legal.

Anything you guys can suggest? I thought of staying up tonight with all the lights off, waiting by the back door with a baseball bat…

Arcade-ium

meeshasarcadegame.jpgI was once a District Sales Manager for an entertainment company that rhymes with Arcade-ium. We had 2 major locations, one downtown and one in Mississauga.
The one downtown was fairly large and expensive, apparently one of the highest rent in the entertainment district at over $100,000 per month. After almost 2 years of playing games, the place was not making enough money to survive and kept borrowing from the less rent-heavy and more lucrative Mississauga location. Only one thing left to do: close downtown and keep suburbs alive and triving. Since I had no intention of moving my office to Mississauga, I resigned with 3 weeks notice.

Knowing that the place was going to close down and that I had many future corporate events booked there, I didn’t want to anger my clients, I wanted to make them aware right away so they could cancel, get refunded and have enough time to book somewhere else, but my bosses didn’t want me too. They wanted to just move the parties / events to Mississauga without giving them the option… a take it or leave it situation… very mature! At the time, I wanted to stay in the entertainment business and keep my clients, so I pushed… and pushed… and pushed to get permission to alert them. It was a big fat “no” all along with no explanation why. I knew why of course, but I didn’t think it fair to keep my clients hostage any longer.

I wrote a long email to my Manager and Director explaining why I should be given permission to contact my guys and that in the end most would be stuck due to time constraints and would probably elect to choose the Mississauga location anyway. But they wouldn’t hear of it. So I copied my original email and the reply to the Board of Directors, my Manager and Director, and then went to meet one of my client coming for a site tour. As I was touring the location, I heard my name on the P.A. system asking me to come to the office right away. I chose to ignore it, clients come first.

When I finished the tour, I walked back to my desk and there was the Director, red in anger, with an envelope in his hand. I knew what was coming. He asked me to go with him in the manager’s office. First question he asked was why I sent the email to the BofD. I told him that I felt very strongly that I was going to continue a relationship with my clients and I didn’t want them to have ill-feelings about me for leaving them without taking care of this situation. I added that regardless of their decision I was indeed going to contact them and let them know, I was tired of playing games (no pun intended I added). The Director got up to stand in front of me, probably trying to intimidate me, and said: “You will not do anything without our permission, you work for us and will do what we tell you to do” #49. I got up myself and reminded him that I had resigned already. He told me to sit down. I didn’t. I turned around and said: “Anything you have to say to me, you can say to my ass, because my face is out of your office”.

It was a quick 30 steps to my desk, when I reached it, he was standing beside me, envelope in hand and told me to get out right away, to not touch my computer and come back on another day to pick up my personal belongings.

I went to the bank to deposit my final paycheque nicely handed to me personally and thanking my stars I had given 3 weeks notice… it was a nice paycheque.

When I got home that afternoon, I called all my clients booked for the season to let them know I had resigned, that the location would be closing within the next month, that they had all the rights to demand a refund if they wanted to cancel and book somewhere else or that they could move their party to the Mississauga location. I told them to act quickly and to contact the Director personally. I gave them his info.

I, later on, booked most of those clients once again for different corporated events at my next location of business as a District Sales Manager, a place that rhymes with Ontario Face.

GI Joe

This is a classic.

DR and I were just falling in love when we discovered this, we laughed to tears one night in his loft watching and re-watching episodes.

It still makes me laugh out loud.

This one is my second all time GI Joe favourite:

But of course, if you do a search on YouTube, you’ll find the entire collection available…

A year ago, the Photogs introduced us to Kath & Kim, one of the funniest show ever to hit TV with possibly the best opening song. In fact we were lucky enough to receive the first 3 season on DVD as part of a wedding gift from them and have watched all episodes in a marathon, followed by their first movie: Da Kath & Kim Code, a parody of DaVinci Code. For months after, we’ve been imitating the characters’ voices and catch-phrashes (you really have to hear them from the character to know how funny those are).

The show is an import from Australia, so don’t feel bad if you haven’t heard of it… but if you have, I know you share my views on the funny women.

Anyway, this morning I get an email from Kath and Kim telling me that their 4th season is about to start on the weekend… Unfortunately not living in Australia, I’ll have to wait for it to hit Showcase or to be available on DVD. But, they had this cute game where you can make

look like

and all sort of other people in between.

Try it, it’s fun: Kath & Kim Nip Tuck.

Revenge of the Homelessess..ess

Yesterday, without even noticing ourselves, DR and I dressed almost identically.
Both wearing beige khakis, both wearing plaid orange / red short sleeve shirts, both wearing our bags cross-strapped over the shoulders.

As usual, on our morning walk to the Carlton Subway, we banter, we discuss the fate of the world, we giggle like school girls. We get to the corner of Carlton / Jarvis, wait for the light to turn green – and – BAM! This homeless guy, takes one quick look at us and says: “that’s so gay!” and rides away. It took me a few seconds to register, then I turn to DR and asks if this guy really said what I thought I heard him say. He confirms. I look at his clothes, then at mine and realized to my horror that we were twins for the day #80!

Today, we made sure that the colours don’t match!

The Doctor

I think most people who know me, know that I’m impatient.

If I go to the grocery store, I have my money ready.
If I go to the bank machine and wait in line, I have my bank card ready.
If I go to a fast food restaurant, I know what I want by the time I get to the server.

Last week, I was in line at my favourite Starbucks at Sick Kids Hospital. There was a much older gentleman, I’d venture to say in his late 70′s, back arched, hair thinning, thick glasses, pants showing signs of having been over-worn, wrinkled shirt and an open lab coat, leading me to believe he’s a doctor on site. There are 5 people in a single line up for 2 different servers, he’s first in line, I’m fifth. He gets to the counter and order.

Now, with all the different coffee houses choices in Ontario, if you go to Starbucks, it’s really by choice, you don’t necessarily fall into it, not knowing what to order and stuff, and therefore, you should expect the price of your drink. Mind you it could be your first time, but you wouldn’t necessarily call the drinks by their “Starbucks” name. The Dr orders a Venti Mild. That’s $2.23. I know because that’s what I have every morning as well.

It took the same amount of time to serve the Dr as it took to serve all other 4 people in front of me. I was really getting impatient with him taking a long time just to get the $2.23 together to pay.

It’s finally my turn, I order, I pay and then make my way to the milk/cream counter. Dr is there, looking at his options and decides on milk, skim milk, the same I was about to reach for.

Again I’m waiting for him to finish. When done, he takes a lid, puts it on the cup slowly and starts to move to give me some room, he smiles at me. He took me by surprise, I half-smile back. He moves to the side and I continue watching him as I pour milk in my cup, put a lid and get a move on. I’m almost late for work. As I walk past him, this much younger gentleman walks to him, shakes his hand and says: “Thank you so much for all you’ve done, you have no idea how grateful we both are”.

I have been looking for the Dr every morning since. I would love to buy his coffee one of these days, do something nice for him… and get rid of the guilt I felt after I left to get to the office… with time to spare.

Another smoker’s tale

This morning I got annoyed…. again!
I do walk faster than most people, my problem I know, but I was being blocked by a woman pushing a toddler in a pram. Her cigarette smoke was practically choking me. Got much annoyed indeed.
So when I finally managed to pass her I noticed she had a fairly large belly, which annoyed me even more and felt I had to say something: “Pregnant women really shouldn’t smoke”.

“It’s none of your fucking business”, she replied quickly and suddenly stopped, almost mid-sentence.

And then I realized she wasn’t pregnant…
And I started walking faster…

And yeah, it’s none of my business how she lives her life… but I’ve been working for over 25 years now, I’ve paid Federal taxes for 25 years too. Taxes that fund the Health Care system. Health Care she’s gonna use when she gets lung cancer. Health Care partly funded by me. So in a way, it is sort of my business… #27

But I wasn’t going to have that argument with her this morning.
